Somerset Council have launched a public consultation on the Council’s budget. It will enable members of the public the opportunity to have their say in light of the financial emergency declared in November 2023.
What is the Emergency?
This year 2023-24 the overspend is £27 Million
The projected budget gap (overspend) in 2024-25 is currently expected to be £100 Million
In order to balance the budget next year the Council is already considering service reductions, efficiency savings and increasing fees including Council Tax. It is already clear that this will not be enough and measures to fundamentally change the Council’s systems and processes to streamline its operations will need to speed up to reduce the size of the Council in the future
Before making decisions which will affect the people of Somerset the Council believe it is important to consult with everyone likely to be affected including residents, businesses, stakeholders and partners. The consultation is available on line, in libraries and Council Offices throughout Somerset

Consultation is open from now until 22nd January 2024
